BAKU: A passenger plane has crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan on Wednesday morning, according to the country’s emergencies ministry.

Fourteen people had survived the plane crash in Kazakhstan and had been hospitalised, according to the local health officials.

“At the moment, 14 survivors have been taken to the regional hospital, including five in intensive care,” the health ministry’s regional department said in a statement.

Azerbaijan  Airlines flight 8432, carrying 72 passengers, was en-route from Baku to Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya when it caught fire and crashed.

According to Russian news agencies, the aircraft was rerouted due to fog in Grozny. Emergency responders immediately reached the site of the crash and attempted to douse the fire.

Fifty-two personnel and 11 units of equipment from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan have been deployed. Upon arrival, the aircraft was found ablaze. Rescue operations are ongoing, and information about the victims is being clarified,” the statement said.

Authorities in Kazakhstan said they had begun looking into different possible versions of what had happened, including a technical problem, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported.
