BALTIMORE: A container ship collided with a major bridge in Baltimore located in the state of Maryland, United States (US). The collision prompted a rescue operation for six workers who are currently missing.

As per reports, at approximately 1:30 am local time, a container ship identified as the “Dali” lost power shortly after departing from the port of Baltimore. Despite efforts by the crew to regain control, the vessel collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Despite efforts to steer the ship away from the bridge, including dropping the ship’s anchor, the container still collided with the bridge. Eyewitness accounts say the bridge quickly “crumbled” into the Patapsco River following the collision.

In spite of ongoing search and rescue operations, the whereabouts of the missing individuals remain unknown. As per reports, one worker is hospitalised thus far.

While the investigation into the incident is ongoing, reports have surfaced of previous inspections of the vessel. In the past, concerns were raised over the maintenance protocols and even the adequacy of inspections itself, particularly in light of reported machinery issues on the “Dali”.

The collapse has also significantly impacted shipping and trucking operations in Baltimore, a city crucial for movement of goods and commerce along the East Coast of the United States.

With the port closed and the bridge damaged, disruptions and delays were observed throughout supply chains. Efforts are underway to reroute vessels and cargo to alternative ports.

Government officials, led by the Maryland Governor Wes Moore mobilised support for recovery efforts and offered condolences to affected families.
