WEB DESK: In a recent interview with French technology website Numerama, three senior Apple employees provided insights into the new iPad Pro models launched earlier this month.
Although the discussion did not uncover many new details about the devices, it did hint at a potential design change for future iPads.
Currently, the Apple logo on the back of iPads is oriented for portrait use, appearing upright when the device is held vertically. However, many users prefer using iPads in landscape mode, particularly when paired with a keyboard.
This orientation results in the Apple logo appearing sideways. Recognising this shift in user behaviour, Apple moved the front camera to the longer edge on the new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, positioning it at the top-center for landscape use.
During the interview, Apple product designer Molly Anderson acknowledged the increasing prevalence of landscape usage and hinted at a possible redesign. “I think it could change,” Anderson said, according to a computer translation of the French-language interview.
“We are thinking about it. The iPad has long been a product that is used in portrait mode, but we are using it more and more in landscape mode.”
This consideration is not entirely new for Apple. On the software front, iPadOS 14.5 introduced a change where the Apple logo appears in a landscape position during the device’s boot-up when it is held in landscape orientation. This adjustment suggests that Apple is open to adapting its hardware design to better suit landscape usage.
As landscape usage continues to rise, a landscape-oriented Apple logo on future iPads could become a reality, aligning with the way users interact with their devices.
This potential change would mark a significant shift in Apple’s design philosophy, reflecting the evolving needs and preferences of its user base.
