PCB unveils 17-member squad for T20 series against New Zealand

LAHORE: In anticipation of the upcoming T20 series against New Zealand, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has revealed the national team roster, captained by the Babar Azam.

The squad comprises seasoned players along with promising newcomers. Among the notable inclusions are Usman Khan and Irfan Khan Niazi, both making their debut appearances in the national team.

Usman Khan’s consistent performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) over the past two years have earned him a spot, while 21-year-old Irfan Khan Niazi’s stellar performances in domestic cricket and PSL have caught the selectors’ attention.

The squad also marks the return of Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir to international cricket. Their inclusion is likely to bolster Pakistan’s bowling attack as well.

Overall the squad includes, Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Rizwan, Naseem Shah, Azam Khan, Mohammad Amir, Zaman Khan, Imad Wasim, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Abrar Ahmed, Abbas Afridi, Iftikhar Ahmed, Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan and Usman Khan.

Additionally, five reserve players have been included to provide flexibility and adaptability in the series.

The selection committee emphasised a rotation policy aimed at affording maximum opportunities for players to develop synergy and form a cohesive unit, crucial in the lead-up to the ICC T20 World Cup.

Both Usman Khan and Irfan Niazi voiced their joy at being selected for the national squad and shared aims of delivering their best on the field, eager to make a mark in their debut series.

Their sentiments were echoed by team veterans and selectors, who expressed confidence in the newcomers’ abilities to rise to the occasion.

Senior Manager Wahab Riaz, highlighting the significance of the series in the context of the upcoming T20 World Cup, emphasised the importance of utilising the matches to fine-tune strategies and identify key players for the tournament.
