Senator Mushtaq predicts further power bill hike

Senator Mushtaq Senate resolution

ISLAMABAD: Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan from the Jamaat-e-Islami has made a prediction regarding electricity prices.

In an interview with a private TV channel, he stated that the cost is expected to rise to Rs90 per unit in the upcoming month.

Senator Mushtaq advised the public to be prepared for higher bills in September, indicating that the forthcoming billing cycle could see a substantial increase in electricity rates, potentially reaching Rs90 per unit.

Highlighting the issue of electricity theft, he claimed that an estimated 500 billion rupees’ worth of electricity was stolen during the 15 months of the Pakistan Democratic Movement government.

Additionally, the senator expressed skepticism about the possibility of achieving cheaper electricity prices in Pakistan as long as Independent Power Producers (IPPs) remain a part of the energy landscape.

The recent meeting chaired by caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar to address concerns related to electricity bills yielded no conclusive outcome, leaving the matter unresolved and relief for the public uncertain.

Sources indicate however that a supervisory federal cabinet meeting has been convened today, with a primary focus on assessing the nation’s economic condition. During this session, the federal cabinet is expected to review and potentially approve the proposed changes to power bills put forth by the Ministry of Energy.
