PTI bags six seats, opposition five in KP Senate elections

PESHAWAR: In a closely contested Senate election in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly, the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) secured six out of 11 seats, while opposition parties, with significantly fewer seats in the provincial assembly, managed to win five.
According to unofficial and unconfirmed results, PTI could not secure a clean sweep despite holding the support of 93 members of the provincial assembly (MPAs)
Whereas opposition parties with a combined strength of just 52 MPAs managed to pull off notable victories.
PTI’s Murad Saeed emerged as the top vote-getter on general seats with 26 votes.
On the seven general seats, the elected senators include PTI’s Murad Saeed (26 votes), Faisal Javed (22), Mirza Khan Afridi (21), and Pir Noorul Haq Qadri (21).
From the opposition, PML-N’s Adnan Amir Muqam and JUI-F’s Maulana Atta-ul-Haq Dervish secured 18 votes each, while PPP’s Talha Mahmood received 17.

For the two technocrat seats, PTI’s Azam Swati won with 89 votes, and PML-N’s Dilawar Khan secured 54.
On the two reserved seats for women, PTI’s Rubina Naz bagged 89 votes, while PPP’s Rubina Khalid received 52.
Polling began at 11am and continued until 4pm, later extended to 5:30pm to ensure all members could vote.
All 145 members of the KP Assembly cast their votes, with MPA Adnan Wazir casting the first and Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur the last.
The election room was set up in the Jirga Hall of the provincial assembly, with tight security measures in place throughout the process.

Speaking to the media, Leader of the Opposition Dr Ibad Khan said the effort was made to ensure transparency in the Senate elections.
He noted that effective steps were taken to prevent horse-trading, which he described as vital for strengthening democracy.
