RAWALPINDI: Awami Muslim League chief and former interior minister Sheikh Rashid was arrested after his bail application was rejected in the May 9 attack case.
Sheikh Rashid was arrested shortly after he secured bail in 11 other related cases including the GHQ attack case.
The court rejected Sheikh Rashid’s bail in a case registered against him at the New Town police station, and he was arrested from outside the courtroom. The former interior minister was nominated in the case of arson and siege at the office of an intelligence agency.
Anti-Terrorism Court Rawalpindi Judge Malik Asif Ejaz announced the reserved verdict in the GHQ attack case. The verdict was reserved on Monday after the arguments of both the parties were completed
It may be recalled that a few moments ago, the bail of Sheikh Rashid and his nephew Sheikh Rashid Shafiq and others were approved in the GHQ attack case.
Before the verdict today, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and Sheikh Rashid Shafiq reached the anti-terrorism court with their lawyer Sardar Abdul Razzaq. Sheikh Rashid talked to the media and said that after the stroke, he was not in good health.
Talking to the media outside the anti-terrorism court, Sheikh Rashid said that he had nothing to do with these cases; he was not present here on May 9. He said that he was not here from May 8 to May 16; he had nothing to do with the case; Allah will do better.
Sheikh Rashid said that he was banned from talking to the media; the court banned him from media talk. He always respected the institutions; he had nothing to do with all these cases. He said that if he remained alive, he would contest the election; he would contest the election from NA 56 and 57 on the pen and inkpot.
He said that he was facing difficulty in speaking and walking, but his morale was high. He said that he was jailed by court martial court and in the Kalashnikov case. Even if he was sent to jail now, he would win the election, he said.
During the last hearing, the police had requested the arrest of Sheikh Rashid. The investigating officer had shown the court a video of Sheikh Rashid Shafiq on May 9.
It may be noted that on December 9, 2023, the interim bail of Sheikh Rashid was extended till January 4 in the May 9 cases. ATC Judge Malik Asif Ejaz had heard the case, and the court expressed its displeasure over not presenting the complete record of the cases.
The government prosecutor said that the investigation is ongoing and more time should be given, on which the court directed to complete the investigation and present the record by the next date.
