LAHORE: In an effort to combat smog, a ban has been imposed on the burning of crop residues in Lahore, invoking Section 144 of the law.
The act of burning remaining crop stubble and debris will be met with legal consequences, said a notification issued by the Lahore deputy commissioner.
The deputy commissioner highlighted that the burning of crop residues in urban and suburban areas is a significant contributor to the hazardous smog levels, thus necessitating immediate action.
Across the city and its surrounding regions, introductory measures have been initiated against the incineration of crop remnants, Rafa Haider, the spokesperson for the Lahore administration stated adding that this initiative aligns with a comprehensive strategy to improve air quality and mitigate the detrimental impacts of smog.
Furthermore, a complete prohibition has been imposed on the combustion of tires, plastic, polythene bags, rubber, and leather, in addition to crop residues. These steps are integral to tackling the multifaceted issue of air pollution.
In parallel with this ban, a crackdown has been initiated on vehicles and factories emitting excessive smoke, he said.
The spokesperson elaborated that a strict enforcement of “down time” is being implemented against smoke-emitting vehicles and manufacturing units, highlighting the administration’s resolve to address this environmental challenge.
The imposition of this ban under Section 144 marks a significant step preserving the city’s environmental and public health.
