Nationwide load shedding worsens as power shortfall surges over 6,000 MW

ISLAMABAD: The electricity shortfall in Pakistan has surged to 6,070 megawatts, leading to prolonged power outages across the country.

According to sources, the demand for electricity currently stands at 26,000 megawatts, while the production is at 19,929 megawatts. The breakdown of power generation sources is as follows:

– Hydroelectric power plants: 6,900 megawatts

– Public sector thermal power plants: 700 megawatts

– Private sector power plants: 7,988 megawatts

– Wind power plants: 1,000 megawatts

– Solar power plants: 199 megawatts

– Biomass (bagasse) power plants: 142 megawatts

– Nuclear power plants: 3,000 megawatts

Due to this shortfall, load shedding is being carried out for up to 8 hours in various parts of the country. In areas with higher line losses, the duration of load shedding extends to 12 to 14 hours.
