Islamabad police to monitor social media platforms

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad police have set up a special unit to keep an eye on social media platforms, including WhatsApp, in an effort to stop hate speech during Muharram.
The federal capital police have established a special social media cell as well for the said purpose and it has been assigned the task to monitor hate speech in WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms, according to Islamabad police spokesperson.

The police spokesperson said the media cell would work under the supervision of the AIG Operations.
The official warned of action against those sharing hate content during the first Islamic month. “Cases will be lodged in the cybercrime cell against such persons,” the spokesperson said.
Islamabad Police has also devised a security plan for Muharram-ul-Haram under which the security has been enhanced at all entry and exit points while the Dolphin Squad is patrolling in different areas of the city, adding that all senior police officers have been directed to remain in their relevant areas and check the duty points according to the security point of view.
From the 1st of Muharram to the 2nd of Rabi ul Awwal, 181 processions and 965 gatherings are scheduled. Drone cameras will record video for procession security.
Surveillance will utilize CCTV cameras for both processions and gatherings. Special checks will cover the city’s internal and external routes, including procession routes. The Bomb Disposal Squad will ensure route clearance.
Inspector General of Police Islamabad, Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi directed all officers to personally oversee the security measures during Muharram-ul-Harram, remain vigilant to maintain law and order, and perform their duties in accordance with the security plan devised.
