ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Saad Rafique said that his party and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) will contest the February 8, 2024 elections together.

He added that it has been decided that a similar stance will be taken by by both parties on matters related to elections, political and legal matters.

Former Director General of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and new head of PMLN’s Sindh chapter, Bashir Memon, said that they will also try to make coalitions with like-minded parties in Sindh for the betterment of the province.

MQM leader Farooq Sattar said that the problems facing Pakistan right now need to be kept in sight while moving forward. He added that no single political party can resolve these issues.

MQM leader Mustafa Kamal said, “We will not concern ourselves with who did what, rather we will focus on resolving issues that have resulted from such actions”.

The announcement of these two parties coming together has come only days after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and President Arif Alvi agreed on February 8, 2024, as the date for polls after Supreme Court’s explicit orders to decide on one date and stick to it.

Since the announcement and in the preceding few weeks, the political rivalry between PMLN and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has intensified. PPP has been assertively alleging that PML-N has a hidden alliance with the current caretaker government and therefore the elections are not going to take place in a “level playing field”.

The PML-N, the PPP and MQM were coalition partners in the previous government.
