ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is celebrating its 78th Independence Day today with a renewed pledge to uphold the spirit of the Pakistan Movement and transform the country into a true Islamic welfare state.
The day began with a 31-gun salute in the federal capital and 21-gun salutes in provincial headquarters. Special prayers were offered in mosques for peace, prosperity, and national solidarity.
The main flag-hoisting ceremony took place at the Pakistan Monument in Islamabad, where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will raise the national flag. This year’s celebrations are marked with extra fervour following Pakistan’s recent victory in Marka-e-Haq against India’s unprovoked aggression.

PRESIDENT, PM CALL FOR UNITY
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in separate messages, congratulated Pakistanis at home and abroad, urging them to rise above divisions and work for a just and equal society. They paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the Pakistan Movement’s workers for their courage and sacrifices.
The president said this Independence Day carries renewed pride as the nation has demonstrated unity and strength in the face of May’s external aggression. He termed the success in Marka-e-Haq and Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos a testament to Pakistan’s unshakable will and global stature. He also reaffirmed support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir until they secure their right to self-determination.
The prime minister honoured the martyrs of the independence struggle and recent defence efforts, calling Marka-e-Haq a validation of the Two-Nation Theory. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to sovereignty, peaceful coexistence, and dialogue-based resolution of disputes, including Kashmir.
Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted government relief measures, such as reduced electricity tariffs, and vowed to utilise all resources to meet economic, industrial, and technological challenges. He urged political parties and all segments of society to unite for a stronger economy, national defence, and stability.
