Karachi Medical and Dental College implements 150% fee increase

KARACHI: The Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC), affiliated with Karachi Metropolitan University, has implemented a substantial increase in fees for MBBS and BDS programmes, exceeding 150 per cent.
The decision, sanctioned by the KMDC’s governing body led by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, was announced through a notification by Dr Nargis Anjum, the principal of KMDC.
As outlined in the notification, the open merit admission fee has surged from Rs20,000 to Rs50,000, reflecting a noteworthy adjustment.
The tuition fee has been elevated from Rs50,000 to Rs117,600, while the library fee has increased from Rs3,500 to Rs10,000.
Additionally, the student activity/social fee has been raised from Rs8,000 to Rs10,000. Notably, a new development charge of Rs30,000 has been introduced, accompanied by laboratory and IT fees of Rs10,000 and Rs5,000, respectively.
For merit seats, the fees have witnessed a significant escalation from Rs101,500 to Rs268,600. Simultaneously, the self-finance section has undergone similar adjustments.

The admission fee for self-finance has risen from Rs20,000 to Rs100,000. The tuition fee has been doubled, soaring from Rs600,000 to Rs1.2 million, and the library fee has experienced an increase from Rs3,500 to Rs10,000.
According to The News, transportation charges have surged from Rs20,000 to Rs36,000, while the student activity/social fee has been revised from Rs8,000 to Rs10,000.
Furthermore, development charges have been set at Rs50,000, with laboratory and IT fees fixed at Rs10,000 and Rs5,000, respectively.
The self-finance seat, which was priced at Rs651,500 in the previous year, now stands at Rs1,421,000, reflecting a substantial hike.
