Local shortages and imports delay: Sugar prices soar nationwide

ISLAMABAD: The price of sugar has witnessed a significant surge across Pakistan, with some cities experiencing rates as high as Rs200 per kilogram. The primary driver behind this price hike is the shortage of sugar resulting from the export of Pakistan’s locally produced sugar.

Traders in Rawalpindi have indicated that prices are likely to continue rising until imported sugar arrives in the country. Currently, sugar is being sold for Rs190 per kilogram in Rawalpindi.

In Hyderabad, the price of sugar has also seen a notable increase of Rs10 per kilogram, bringing the retail price to Rs185 per kilogram. In the wholesale market in Hyderabad, sugar is reportedly priced at Rs180 per kilogram, marking a significant 22-rupee increase per kilogram over the past week.

Faisalabad has witnessed a surge in open market sugar prices from Rs190 to Rs200 per kilogram. In the wholesale market, a 50-kilogram bag of sugar is being sold for Rs8,800, with the wholesale rate of sugar standing at Rs176 per kilogram.

Similarly, in Sargodha, there has been a Rs30 increase in the sale price of sugar, reaching Rs180 per kilogram. Sukkur has also experienced a significant price hike, with sugar now being sold at Rs180 per kilogram, representing a Rs20 increase per kilogram in just one week.

In Gujranwala, the wholesale market rate for a 50-kilogram bag of sugar is Rs9,000, translating to a general market rate of Rs190 per kilogram.
