ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Capital Police’s Violent Extremism Prevention Unit (VEPU) has ramped up its efforts against online hate content, targeting over 700 social media accounts that disseminate religious and terrorism-related material.
The move comes under the directives of Islamabad Police Inspector-General Dr Akbar Nasir Khan.
“The VEPU, in collaboration with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), has identified these accounts across various platforms, including X and Facebook. Over 200 of these accounts have already been blocked. The unit’s establishment earlier this year marked a significant step in the city’s commitment to counteract online extremism,” the Islamabad police said in a statement.

It said that the VEPU not only monitors online platforms but also actively engages with educational institutions, seminaries, and mosques to challenge extremist narratives.
Dr Akbar Nasir emphasised the unit’s unwavering dedication to tackling extremism without bias. He urged citizens to steer clear of activities that fuel hatred or disseminate misinformation about institutions on social media platforms.
