Murree traffic plan issued for Independence day

MURREE: Keeping in view the massive influx of tourists, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Murree Waseem Akhtar has announced a special traffic plan for Independence Day in the hill station.

Section 144 has already been imposed in Murree, under which only families would be allowed to enter Mall Road and GPO Chowk on August 13 and August 14, which have been declared local holidays in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

According to the Murree Traffic Police spokesperson, more than 200 officers and personnel will be on duty to ensure smooth traffic flow. Traffic from Rawalpindi and Islamabad will be able to reach Murree via the Expressway and RMK GT Road.

Several roads in Murree, including View Fourth Road, Bank Road, Hall Road, Kashmir Point-Kuldana Road, and Imtiaz Shaheed Road, have been designated as one-way. Mall Road has been closed for all types of vehicular traffic.

CTO Waseem Akhtar said under the plan Murree has been divided into five traffic sectors to improve flow. Visitors will be provided travel assistance and other services. Entry of heavy traffic into Murree will remain banned from 6am to 2am. Buses and large vehicles will not be allowed beyond Baroari, Bansra Gali, and Lower Topa.

Vehicles heading to Azad Kashmir can travel via the Expressway. Parking will be prohibited within 200 metres of GPO Chowk, Jhika Gali Chowk, Kuldana Chowk, and Sunny Bank Chowk. GPO Chowk has been declared a parking-free zone.

Will it rain on Independence Day?

The CTO stressed that parking is the biggest issue in Murree and urged tourists to park only in designated areas. In case of any traffic issues, travellers can contact the Traffic Control Room at 051-9269200.

SECTION 144 IMPOSED: ONLY FAMILIES ALLOWED

Deputy Commissioner Murree Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi has imposed Section 144 on Mall Road and GPO Chowk in order to ensure public safety and law & order in the hilly station on the occasion of Independence Day.

Only families would be allowed to enter the places on August 13 and 14.

The decision to that effect was taken on the recommendations of the July 30 meeting of the District Intelligence Committee that Mall Road and GPO Chowk should be reserved for families only to avoid unnecessary crowding and any kind of disturbance during the Independence Day celebrations.

The Deputy Commissioner Murree imposed the restrictions under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code 1898 (Punjab Amendment Act 2024), which would remain in place for three days(August  12 to 14), warning that any violation would be subject to legal action under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The DC, in his order, observed that the step was indispensable to ensure the public safety and a pleasant atmosphere on the occasion of Independence Day in Murree.
