QUETTA: Four of the six young footballers who were kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in Balochistan earlier this month have been rescued and reunited with their families, security forces said Friday.

The players, who were abducted on September 9 while travelling from Dera Bugti to Sibi for a tournament, were rescued after a joint operation by law enforcement agencies, local administration, and provincial authorities, security officials told HUM News English.

“They are safe and sound and have been handed over to their families,” the officials said, adding that efforts were under way to secure the release of the remaining two players who were still in captivity.

The officials did not provide any details about the kidnappers or their motives.

The abduction of the six footballers had sparked outrage and concern among the local sports community and highlighted the security challenges in Balochistan.

Balochistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran, is plagued by Islamist militants, separatist insurgents, and criminal gangs who often kidnap people for ransom.

Earlier, five of the six kidnapped players were identified as Aamir Bugti, Faisal Bugti, Sohail Bugti, Yasar Bugti and Sheraz Bugti.
