Peshawar: In the wake of the recent Battagram chairlift incident, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has issued comprehensive instructions for the inspection and enhancement of safety measures for chairlifts throughout the province.

On Tuesday an open cable car in Battagram became stranded halfway across a ravine and was hanging by a single cable after the other snapped, leaving eight people, including school children,  stuck inside for more than 15 hours.

Deputy commissioners from all districts have been directed by the provincial government to undertake thorough inspections of local chairlifts.

This directive encompasses chairlifts operating in commercial and residential areas, as well as those in entertainment venues.

Moreover, the provincial government has emphasized the immediate inspection of chairlifts situated at entertainment establishments, ensuring that safety protocols are rigorously upheld.

Special attention is to be given to chairlifts that traverse over rivers and streams, warranting a meticulous assessment of their structural integrity.

The directive also extends to evaluating the design, capacity, and safety features of all chairlifts within the province. With a paramount focus on ensuring public safety, the provincial government underscores the need for adherence to established safety standards, particularly during adverse weather conditions like storms and lightning.

To regulate the operation of chairlifts effectively, the provincial government has mandated that obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the district administration is now obligatory.

This measure aims to reinforce accountability and guarantee the implementation of proper safety measures.

In a bid to expedite these safety enhancements, the provincial government has set a deadline for the submission of a comprehensive report on chairlifts across the province. All relevant data and findings are required to be compiled and submitted to the government within the span of a week.
