Caretaker PM seeks recommendations to provide relief to electricity consumers

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq has directed the authorities concerned to take concrete measures and present recommendations to address the issue of electricity bills in the next 48 hours.

During an emergency meeting on Sunday at the Prime Minister’s House, Prime Minister Haq was given a detailed on the substantial surge in electricity bills for the month of July.

The caretaker prime minister said that such measures should be taken which would not put extra pressure on the national treasury. He expressed the importance of providing relief to citizens and ensuring equitable access to essential services.

He further said that it was imperative to prevent a situation where the general public faced hardships while officials enjoyed complimentary electricity usage. He called for transparency and directed relevant ministries and departments to provide a detailed breakdown of beneficiaries availing free electricity.

Furthermore, the prime minister made a personal commitment to minimize electricity expenditures in both the Prime Minister’s House and the Pakistan Secretariat.

In terms of future actions, the prime minister indicated that he would engage in consultations with provincial chief ministers to address the issue of excess bills.

The Prime Minister’s Office also highlighted plans to work closely with distribution companies to curb electricity theft and losses. This collaborative effort seeks to streamline the distribution process and ensure that electricity resources are used efficiently.

Additionally, the prime minister announced that comprehensive reforms within the electricity sector were underway.

“These reforms would encompass both short-term strategies and long-term plans to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of electricity services,” he said.

Another round of the meeting would be held tomorrow.
