Police Lines attack facilitators arrested

PESHAWAR: In a press conference held today, Inspector General (IG) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, Akhtar Hayat Khan, provided a comprehensive overview of the achievements and challenges faced by the police force in the region.

The IG began by announcing a significant breakthrough, stating that “All those involved in the facilitation of the heinous attack on Police Lines have been arrested”. He went on to assure the public that substantial evidence had been collected against the perpetrators.

Highlighting the extensive efforts made under the National Action Plan (NAP), IG Akhtar Hayat revealed that Peshawar had witnessed 14,836 search and strike operations, leading to the arrest of 74,000 individuals. Moreover, he shared that out of more than 200 terrorist attacks on the police this year, 137 had been thwarted, with 917 terrorists arrested.

In the pursuit of maintaining law and order, the police force carried out 2,531 operations, resulting in the elimination of 300 terrorists. However, the fight against terrorism came at a cost, with 185 police officers and youth martyred and 400 injured in various incidents throughout the year.

The IG reported a staggering 193,370 cases registered for various crimes during the year. Additionally, he noted that 96,000 people were questioned during snap checking. He added that out of 80,000 complaints, 79,000 complaints had been resolved through the Citizen Portal App.

IG Akhtar Hayat highlighted the strides made in enhancing the role of women in law enforcement, stating that the number of women police stations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been increased from two to four.

Furthermore, he informed that 53 new buildings of police stations and outposts were under construction, with 37 completed and work on the remaining 16 in progress.

Acknowledging the evolving security landscape, IG Akhtar Hayat underscored the challenges faced in the southern districts, particularly concerning terrorist attacks on police posts at night. To address this, the police force has been equipped with advanced thermal night vision technology.

The IG disclosed that two suicide attacks were foiled in Peshawar, Khyber – in Hangu and Doaba. He also noted an expansion in the number of Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) regions, increasing from 7 to 16, resulting in the exposure of several extortion networks.

Concluding the conference, IG Akhtar Hayat expressed his gratitude to the police force for their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the region, vowing to continue the fight against crime and terrorism.
