MTV VMAs 2023: Taylor Swift, BLACKPINK, Jungkook, Shakira among others soar to victory

NEW JERSEY: The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) took center stage in an action-packed and star-studded pop culture extravaganza. Hosted by rap icon Nicki Minaj, the event featured numerous performances by global acts and witnessed history being made. Here are the highlights:

This year’s VMAs, broadcast live from Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center on September 12, saw Nicki Minaj return as the show’s compere and perform her new single, Last Time I Saw You from Pink Friday 2.

The star-studded lineup included Olivia Rodrigo, Stray Kids, Doja Cat, Sabrina Carpenter, Karol G, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, TXT, Fall Out Boy, Peso Pluma, as well as Video Vanguard recipient Shakira and Global Icon honoree P. Diddy.

Leading the nominations was Taylor Swift, with 8 nods, followed closely by SZA with 6. Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, Sam Smith, and Nicki Minaj each received 5 nominations.

However, the night’s biggest winner was Taylor Swift, who made history by winning 9 Moon Persons in a single night. This achievement elevated her to the second-most awarded artist in VMAs history, with a total of 23 wins (behind Beyoncé with 30), and established her as the most awarded female artist in a single night.
