WEB DESK: Air quality in several cities across India and Pakistan reached critical levels.
As per reports, cities such as Begusarai and Guwahati in India reported dangerously high levels of Air Quality Index (AQI) readings.
Similarly, Lahore in Pakistan stood in top 5 for most polluted cities in world.

For Indian cities, Begusarai recorded an AQI of 118.9, while Guwahati followed closely behind with an AQI reading of 105.4. New Delhi recorded pollution AQIs of 102.1.
The high levels of particulate matter and other harmful pollutants in these cities post serious health risks to residents. Studies have linked poor air quality to increased rates of respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems and other health complications.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) identified air pollution as a leading environmental risk factor for health. It contributed to millions of premature deaths globally each year.
In India alone, air pollution is estimated to have caused over a million deaths annually, with vulnerable populations – children and the elderly – particularly affected.
Local authorities are under mounting pressure to implement effective strategies to combat pollution. Initiatives can include stricter emissions regulations, promotion of public transportation and increased investment in green infrastructure.
However, issues remain, including rapid urbanisation, industrial emissions, and vehicular pollution.
In contrast, the world’s cleanest cities include Melbourne, Australia and Auckland in New Zealand. The governments there adopted policies that prioritised air quality and public health.
These urban dwellings depend largely on using public transportation more, have developed green spaces and most importantly, lower population than India and Pakistani cities.
Melbourne invested in extensive public transport systems and green initiatives, which contributed to its reputation as one of the cleanest cities globally.
