Yellowstone fans have a new Netflix series to binge this week

The Abandons

Netflix is stepping into Western territory with a new frontier drama arriving on 4 December, and early reactions suggest it could appeal directly to Yellowstone fans waiting for the franchise’s upcoming spinoffs.

A new Western from the creator of Sons of Anarchy

The series, titled The Abandons, comes from Kurt Sutter, the creator of Sons of Anarchy. Set in 1850s Oregon, it follows Lena Headey as Fiona Nolan, a fiercely protective woman whose recently claimed land is threatened by the powerful and calculating Constance Van Ness, played by Gillian Anderson.

The trailer hints at tense feuds, violent power struggles and a lawless fight for survival. Fans of Sutter’s work have also noticed the return of Ryan Hurst, sparking speculation about thematic ties to Sons of Anarchy, although the shows are not officially connected.

Why Yellowstone viewers are paying attention

The Abandons shares core themes with Yellowstone and its prequels 1883 and 1923, centred on defending land, legacy and survival on the American frontier. Its mid-19th-century setting falls between the timelines of the Dutton prequel series, offering a familiar era for fans of Taylor Sheridan’s universe.

The release also comes during a quiet period for Yellowstone, following its divisive finale and Kevin Costner’s exit. With confirmed projects such as Y: Marshals and an additional planned Beth and Rip series in development, many viewers are looking for something new to fill the gap.

There is added intrigue behind the scenes. Sheridan once acted in Sons of Anarchy before leaving the show after a contract dispute, and some fans have wondered whether Sutter’s new series might become a direct challenger to Sheridan’s Western world.

When The Abandons releases

The Abandons premieres Thursday, 4 December, exclusively on Netflix. All episodes will be available at launch.
