WEB DESK: Residents of Karachi are being urged to prepare for a sharp and significant drop in temperatures starting this weekend, with the mercury potentially plummeting to single digits. While the residents received some rain earlier, true winter was yet to make its away.
According to Deputy Director of the Meteorological Department, Anjum Nazeer Zia, a powerful western weather system that has been affecting the country since December 29th is now shifting. This shift will allow cold, dry winds from Siberia to sweep into the city. “The Siberian winds are turning towards Karachi,” Zia stated. “We expect a noticeable drop in temperature, and the city’s temperature could fall to single digits in the coming days.”
The warning follows a night of light to moderate rain across most parts of Karachi, which brought a brief respite from the dry spell. Kemari recorded the highest rainfall at 6 mm. While the current spell of rain has nearly ended, clouds still linger over the city, with a chance of isolated drizzle in one or two areas until this evening.
However, the focus is now squarely on the impending cold. As the western disturbance moves eastward, it will pave the way for the icy Siberian airflow to take hold. The Met Office has forecast that this will lead to a significant intensification of the cold, particularly from January 4th and 5th.
Citizens are advised to take necessary precautions against the severe cold wave, ensuring adequate heating and warm clothing, especially for vulnerable populations.
