ABUJA: British heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua was injured in a car accident on Monday, while two other individuals were said to have died at the scene.
According to reports, the incident occurred when a vehicle carrying the WBA heavyweight title holder collided with a stationary truck. The circumstances surrounding the crash are still unfolding.
Videos circulating on social media show the Olympic gold medalist in visible pain as he was assisted out of the badly damaged vehicle. Another clip reportedly shows Joshua seated inside an emergency vehicle, appearing distressed and receiving attention following the crash.
While details about the extent of his injuries remain unclear, the incident has sparked widespread concern among fans worldwide as authorities continue to investigate what exactly happened.
Joshua won the IBF heavyweight title in 2016 and quickly established himself as one of boxing’s leading figures. He went on to unify the division with impressive wins over Wladimir Klitschko, Joseph Parker and Alexander Povetkin.
His run at the top came to a shock halt in 2019 when he was beaten by Andy Ruiz Jr, but he bounced back later that year by winning the rematch and regaining his titles.
However, the BBC added that consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021 and 2022 brought his second reign to an end.
Since then, Joshua has been rebuilding his career under new trainers, relying on the athleticism, power and star appeal that made him one of the sport’s biggest names.
In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded an MBE in 2013 after his Olympic success, and later received an OBE in 2018 for his wider contribution to sport.
