We played fearless cricket and felt no pressure against India: U-19 player Sameer Ahmed Minhas

WEB DESK: Pakistan’s Under-19 team’s Asia Cup triumph was the result of a carefully planned selection process, strong backing from the management, and fearless cricket on the field, team officials and players said following the historic win.

Head coach Shahid Anwar revealed that the groundwork for the successful campaign began months earlier. “The process started on June 17, when 70 players were called for trials,” he said. After evaluating performances, a training camp was organised for 30 shortlisted players, who were then given opportunities in a one-day tournament to assess their match readiness. “Before heading to the Asia Cup, our goal was clear — to win the trophy and the hearts of the fans,” Anwar added.

Former Pakistan captain and team mentor Sarfraz Ahmed said the players had recently met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who announced a cash reward of Rs10 million for each member of the squad in recognition of their achievement. “All the players and coaches worked extremely hard,” Sarfraz said, expressing hope that the young cricketers would continue to perform consistently in the future. He added that the prime minister had warmly encouraged the team, calling the title win a matter of pride for the country. Sarfraz also praised Sameer Ahmed for playing a crucial innings that laid a solid foundation for the team.

Team captain Farhan Yousaf said the Asia Cup victory was a collective effort. “Every player played an important role in winning the trophy,” he said, while also acknowledging the strong support provided by the team management. Speaking about the much-anticipated clash against India, Farhan said the team entered the match fully prepared and played aggressive, confident cricket.

Match-winner Sameer Ahmed Minhas echoed similar sentiments, crediting the management for instilling belief in the squad. “We were told to play fearless cricket,” he said. “I had decided to play one solid innings, and I didn’t take any pressure in the match against India.”

The statements collectively underlined the planning, confidence and unity that powered Pakistan U19 to Asia Cup glory.
