NEW YORK: The Wall Street Journal has issued an open charge sheet on Narendra Modi and India over their Hindutva identity.
According to the report by the international publication, along with Muslims, the Christian minority is also facing a dire situation in India. India’s Hindutva mission has become a source of global embarrassment, the paper said in a special report. The reputable global journal also exposed the BJP government’s claims of democracy.
The journal said that the Modi government is fascist and represents only the Hindu majority. The BJP government is practicing religious and ethnic discrimination against minorities.
During Narendra Modi’s tenure, it said, violence against religious minorities in India has increased alarmingly. Since 2014, in Modi’s India, Muslims have faced discrimination in housing, employment, education, and even voting rights. India’s secular claims have been laid bare.
The Wall Street Journal wrote that despite being only 2.3 per cent of the population, Christians are also victims of Hindutva violence. In 2025, 706 anti-Christian incidents were recorded.
It said that there were attacks on churches, violence during worship, and vandalism of Christmas symbols, yet Modi deliberately remained silent. Modi visiting churches without condemning the attacks is a clear governmental signal to extremist Hindu elements. Anti-conversion laws, police inaction, and state attitudes are providing practical protection to violence against minorities.
The report stated that secularism in India is now merely a slogan, and minorities across the country are victims of symbolic and organised violence.
“Modi’s India is no longer a full-class democracy but has become a full-class majoritarian state. Fear has become the identity of minorities in India. Under Narendra Modi, violence against religious minorities is becoming routine.”
According to an Indian human rights organisation, the report said, the attacks on Christmas were organised and violent. According to the United Christian Forum, attacks on Christians rose from 139 in 2014 to 834 in 2024. In 2025, up to November, 706 attacks on Christians were recorded in India.
The report further stated that Christmas 2025 became a national flashpoint of religious extremism in India. The Yogi Adityanath government ordered schools to remain open on Christmas Day.
In Uttar Pradesh, it said, crowds gathered outside churches chanting “death to Christian missionaries.” In Madhya Pradesh, a BJP leader stormed a church and assaulted a blind woman. In Chhattisgarh, Christmas decorations were destroyed in a shopping mall and statues of Santa Claus were smashed.
The US Commission on International Religious Freedom recommended designating India as a “Country of Particular Concern.” State silence over religious violence in India signals a free hand to extremists. Modi did not condemn the nationwide attacks on Christians. Secularism in India has practically ended under Modi.
Maulana Tahir Ashrafi said the Indian Prime Minister did not even bother to condemn violent groups.
Bishop Sarfraz Peter said that in Pakistan, the entire nation shared the joys of Christian brothers and sisters at Christmas.
Khalid Das Kohistani said the BJP government is pursuing a politics of hatred against minorities.
According to political analysts, the world’s eyes are on the behaviour of the Indian government — its attitude towards minorities is leading to diplomatic isolation.
Bishop Azad Marshall said the BJP government cannot absolve itself of responsibility for the destruction that took place at Christmas.
