Sohail Afridi calls for consensus-based strategy against terrorism

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Monday called for a consensus-based national strategy to combat terrorism, saying that sustainable peace could only be achieved through collective policymaking involving all stakeholders.

Addressing the KP Assembly after arriving unexpectedly, the chief minister said that decisions taken without consultation had deepened mistrust between the federation and the province. He criticised federal policies and alleged that a negative propaganda campaign was being carried out against him and his government.

Afridi reiterated his willingness to engage in dialogue with the federal government and state institutions. Responding to a question, he said he was ready to sit with everyone for the sake of the province and its people.

During his address, the chief minister disclosed that a 24-member committee had decided to conduct an operation in the Tirah region. He announced that all future communication with federal institutions would be carried out in writing rather than verbally.

Highlighting financial concerns, Afridi said the federal government still owed Rs52 billion in payments related to internally displaced persons (IDPs). He added that outstanding liabilities of the federation to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had reached Rs4,758 billion.

Calling for unity among political forces, the chief minister urged all political parties and provincial stakeholders to sit together and formulate a comprehensive policy to counter terrorism. He said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was once again facing a wave of militancy, but stressed that no political or religious party was responsible for the prevailing law and order situation.

Afridi maintained that only a coordinated and inclusive national approach could restore peace and stability in the province.
