Smog in Punjab has brought the govt to knees

LAHORE: Despite enduring nearly a decade of winter smog, the government has seemingly conceded defeat in its battle against air pollution in Punjab, Lahore, now unofficially dubbed ‘smog-season’.

Since its first major smog encounter in November 2015, Lahore has consistently ranked among the world’s top ten most polluted cities. This year, areas like Gulberg, Polo Ground, Pakistan Engineering Services Headquarters, and Mall Road have recorded exceptionally high Air Quality Index (AQI) readings.

The provincial government’s measures, such as enforcing mask mandates, early business closures, and weekend shutdowns of schools and workplaces, echo past efforts but are criticized for their ineffectiveness. Concerns are high over the government’s inefficiency leading to increased respiratory issues.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency warns that smog, rich in ozone, poses serious health risks, including lung damage and aggravation of respiratory diseases.

Residents are already experiencing health issues due to high AQI levels. The predominant cause of Lahore’s air pollution, as per the Urban Unit’s report, is transport, contributing 83.15 per cent, followed by industries, agriculture, trash burning, commercial, and domestic activities.

Experts suggest that comprehensive solutions, like improving public transport and transitioning to higher-quality fuels, are essential.

They emphasize the need for long-term strategies, like addressing substandard fuel usage and creating separate industrial zones.
Despite the apparent government inaction, residents demand effective measures, citing the significant air quality improvement during the 2020 coronavirus lockdown.

The argument has led many to advocate for online classes to reduce vehicular pollution.

Meanwhile, health authorities say that so far, the only effective way to remain safe is the usage of the N-95 masks.

The ongoing crisis is a true test of the seriousness of the government of a crisis that repeats itself each year with a greater intensity than the last.
