Security high alert across churches in Punjab

LAHORE: Punjab Police have been placed on high alert in view of Christian prayer programs being held in churches across the province, including Lahore, officials said on Friday.

Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar has directed supervisory officers to personally review security arrangements at churches and other important locations. He ordered the deployment of additional police personnel and snipers at sensitive churches to prevent any untoward incident.

IG Usman also instructed that Dolphin Squad, Police Response Unit (PRU), and elite force teams should carry out effective patrolling in and around churches. Deputy police officers and personnel have been directed to remain vigilant and keep a close watch on suspicious and malicious elements.

Dr Usman Anwar also ordered the continuation of search and sweep operations around churches, Christian settlements, and other sensitive places to ensure foolproof security during religious gatherings.

Meanwhile, air quality in Lahore continued to deteriorate, with the city ranking fifth on the list of the world’s most polluted cities in terms of air pollution.

According to monitoring data, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore was recorded at 176, indicating unhealthy air conditions. The highest AQI of 276 was recorded in the UET area, while the Secretariat area reported an AQI of 269. In Gulberg, the air quality index stood at 253. Health experts have advised citizens, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses, to limit outdoor activities and take precautionary measures as pollution levels remain hazardous.
