PERTH: The Sydney Sixers, featuring star batter Babar Azam, suffered defeat in the opening match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025 as the Perth Scorchers claimed victory in the Scorchers vs Sixers opener on Sunday.

In the Scorchers vs Sixers clash, in-form Babar Azam failed to deliver with the bat for Moises Henriques’ side, despite having expressed strong confidence ahead of the encounter.

Scorchers Batting

Chasing the target, Ashton Turner’s Perth Scorchers made a steady start in the Scorchers vs Sixers match. Opener Mitchell Marsh was dismissed for a duck after facing three balls, but Finn Allen counterattacked with a brisk 16 off 8 deliveries.

Cooper Connolly then took charge, producing a dominant innings of 59 off 31 balls, including five sixes and three fours, before being dismissed by Ben Dwarshuis.

The remaining batters made useful contributions as Aaron Hardie scored 13, Laurie Evans added 8, and skipper Ashton Turner remained unbeaten on 16 to guide the Scorchers home.

Sixers Batting

For the Sixers, Babar Azam managed just 2 runs off 5 balls before being dismissed by Brody Couch in the Scorchers vs Sixers contest.

Daniel Hughes endured a difficult outing, departing for a duck after being dismissed by Aaron Hardie, leaving the Sixers reeling at 2 for 2 and under early pressure.

Josh Philippe and Jack Edwards provided some resistance in the middle order, scoring 28 off 18 balls and an unbeaten 46 off 21 balls respectively. Lachlan Shaw contributed 19, skipper Moises Henriques made 9, while Ben Dwarshuis added 6 lower down the order.

The Sixers finished on 113, including three extras, but the total proved insufficient as the Scorchers sealed victory in the BBL 2025 opener.
