KARACHI: The much-anticipated introduction of new currency notes in Pakistan is nearing its final stages, with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) ready to move forward, pending approval from the federal government.
According to sources, preparations have been completed by the Security Printing Corporation, which has developed the new currency notes equipped with modern and effective security features. However, the final designs of the new notes have not yet been approved by the federal government, delaying the official rollout.
Amir Shams, Senior Manager of Printing at the Security Printing Corporation, confirmed that consultations have taken place between the State Bank and the corporation regarding the printing process. He stated that once the designs are finalized, it will take approximately two months to print the new currency notes, as the necessary modern machinery is already in place for production.
Shams also revealed that the new currency notes may be issued either in phases or as a complete set of all denominations, a decision that is still under review by the State Bank. An official timeline for the printing and release of the new currency is expected to be announced later this year.
Sources say that the official order to begin printing the new currency notes will only be issued after the approval of the federal cabinet. The final designs have already been shortlisted by the State Bank and forwarded to the government for approval.
If the cabinet gives its green light, the new currency notes may begin circulating by the end of 2026, marking a significant change in Pakistan’s monetary landscape.
