Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Mirren were celebrated with major lifetime awards at a new Golden Globes ceremony, turning the night into a star-filled tribute to two of the most iconic names in film and television.

Parker received the Carol Burnett Award for outstanding contributions to television, while Mirren was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in film. The honours were handed out during Golden Eve, a new stand-alone event held ahead of the main Golden Globes broadcast.

Matthew Broderick surprises Sarah Jessica Parker

Parker, 60, was presented with her award by her husband of nearly 30 years, actor Matthew Broderick, who joked that he once questioned whether she should take on what became her defining role as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City.

The series went on to become a global phenomenon, earning Parker six Golden Globes and two Emmys, as well as spawning two films and the recent revival And Just Like That….

Accepting the honour, Parker said, “It has been a privilege and a dream to call myself an actor.”

She also received emotional tributes from longtime co-star Kristin Davis and a toast led by Colman Domingo, complete with cosmopolitans, the cocktail made famous by the show.

Helen Mirren reflects on her legacy

Mirren, 80, was presented with the DeMille Award by Harrison Ford, her co-star in The Mosquito Coast and the series 1923.

“I prefer to think of this as an ongoing reflection of my career rather than a eulogy,” Mirren said.

The Oscar winner, best known for portraying Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, also paid tribute to the women who inspired her, including Jane Fonda, Bette Davis, Judy Garland, Cher, Barbra Streisand, Meryl Streep and Viola Davis.

Davis, last year’s DeMille recipient, returned the praise, calling Mirren a formative influence.

A new Golden Globes tradition

Golden Eve was held at the Beverly Hilton and will air separately from the main Golden Globes ceremony. Both Parker and Mirren will also be acknowledged during the live show.
