PSL grows to eight teams: US officials applaud new investments in Pakistani cricket

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set for a historic expansion, growing from six to eight teams ahead of its 11th edition in 2026. The addition of the two new franchises has attracted international attention, with US officials praising the investments as a positive step for both cricket in Pakistan and bilateral relations.

On Thursday evening in Islamabad, the PSL’s eighth team was sold to OZ Group for Rs 1.85 billion, with Sialkot chosen as the team’s base. Meanwhile, the seventh team, owned by FKS Group and based in Hyderabad, was auctioned for Rs1.75 billion. Together, the two new franchises represent a total investment of Rs 3.6 billion in Pakistan’s premier T20 league, signalling growing commercial confidence in the league.

An official from OZ Group expressed excitement over joining the PSL, saying, “We are thrilled to bring a team to Sialkot and engage with passionate cricket fans. Our focus will be on building a strong squad, scouting emerging talent, and creating a vibrant fan experience.” Sialkot, known internationally for its sporting goods industry, is expected to bring a unique identity and regional pride to the league.

FKS Group, the Hyderabad-based franchise owner, also shared plans for the team. “Hyderabad has a rich cricketing culture, and we aim to nurture local talent while creating an exciting team for the PSL,” said a representative. “We see this as an opportunity not just for cricket, but for building connections between communities and inspiring the next generation of Pakistani cricketers.”

The US Chargé d’Affaires congratulated both groups, stating, “The PSL and the Pakistan Cricket Board deserve recognition for this achievement. Investment from the United States in Pakistan’s cricket is very welcome. We also congratulate Fawad of OZ Group and Hamza Majeed of FKS Group for their commitment to the league.”

Netley Baker, another US official, added, “These investments will strengthen ties between Pakistan and the United States while promoting international engagement in cricket.”

The PSL’s expansion is part of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s strategy to broaden the league’s commercial footprint and increase national engagement. By introducing Sialkot and Hyderabad as new cricket hubs, the league aims to foster regional rivalries, create economic opportunities, and provide a platform for emerging Pakistani talent.

Analysts suggest that the entry of international and domestic investors like OZ and FKS Groups reflects rising confidence in Pakistan’s cricket infrastructure and its potential as a hub for global sporting investments. As preparations continue for the 2026 season, fans are eagerly anticipating how the new teams will reshape the PSL, both on and off the field.
