ISLAMABAD: In another power tariff hike, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has increased electricity price by Rs1.81 per unit.
The green light for this significant hike in electricity prices for government-run distribution companies (DISCOs) has been given by NEPRA. The increase is part of the monthly fuel adjustment for May and will take effect in the upcoming billing cycle.
This approval means that consumers of government DISCOs will face an additional burden of approximately Rs24 billion. However, it is important to note that Lifeline customers (low-income consumers), charging stations, and K Electric customers will not be affected by this adjustment.
Additionally, NEPRA has also approved a separate price increase of Rs2.31 per unit for electricity consumers in Karachi. This decision will cost an additional Rs4.30 billion for the citizens of the metropolis.
The extra charge for both government DISCOs and Karachi consumers will be reflected in their electricity bills for the month of August.
NEPRA has clarified that the increase was made in the context of the monthly fuel adjustment for June.
A NEPRA spokesperson commented on the decision, stating that the hike in electricity prices was necessitated by the rising cost of fuel during the month of May.
