PM Shehbaz Sharif calls for more effective Ramadan package

PM Shehbaz Sharif

WEB DESK: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired a review meeting on the federal government’s proposed Ramadan package and examined the third-party validation of last year’s program. He praised the report from a globally reputed audit firm, which confirmed that last year’s package was both transparent and effective, with no financial irregularities or major administrative lapses identified.

Transparent System for Subsidized Goods

The Prime Minister highlighted that, since last year, the government has implemented a transparent system to provide essential food items to the poor at subsidized rates. Decades of corruption and mismanagement in utility stores, which often denied eligible citizens their benefits, have been replaced with an accountable mechanism to ensure aid reaches the intended recipients.

Digital Wallets to Preserve Dignity

Shehbaz Sharif directed that this year’s disbursement should be delivered via digital wallets, protecting recipients’ dignity while also supporting Pakistan’s transition toward a cashless economy. The involvement of the State Bank of Pakistan in distribution will further strengthen the initiative.

Comprehensive Strategy and Wider Inclusion

All relevant ministries and departments have been instructed to prepare a more effective and beneficial Ramadan package than last year. A comprehensive plan with practical measures, a digital dashboard, and structured monitoring will ensure transparency and expand the reach of aid to as many deserving citizens as possible.

Integration with Social Protection Program

The Benazir Income Support Program will distribute free SIM cards under its social protection wallet system, with all aid set to be digitally delivered from March 2026. The move aims to streamline assistance, enhance accountability, and provide financial support efficiently to low-income families.

Government Priorities

The Prime Minister reiterated that supporting the poor and lower-income citizens remains a top priority for the government, emphasising fairness, efficiency, and social welfare as guiding principles for the Ramadan package.
