ISLAMABAD: The prestigious public sector institution in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Peshawar University, finds itself embroiled in a financial conundrum as the salaries of faculty members and pensions for retired employees remain undispersed for the month of December.
The alarming situation is attributed to an ongoing power struggle within the university, with sources pointing fingers at Pro Vice Chancellor (Pro VC) Dr. Muhammad Saleem for the alleged misuse of powers.
According to reliable sources, the university failed to release salaries and pensions, prompting the Peshawar University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) to take action. PUTA, in response to the unauthorized stoppage of salaries, penned a letter addressed to the Registrar University, expressing serious concern over the financial predicament faced by its members.

Despite the availability of ample funds and the recent government grant to the university, the registrar’s office, under Dr. Muhammad Saleem’s leadership, has been unable to disburse salaries even into the third week of December 2023, as outlined in PUTA’s letter.

The association emphasized that this delay not only imposes financial strain on the dedicated faculty but also constitutes a violation of basic human rights. PUTA’s Executive Committee unanimously voiced deep concern over the deteriorating administrative situation, highlighting the critical importance of the financial well-being of university employees in maintaining a conducive and productive academic environment.
In a plea for immediate action, PUTA urged the university administration to promptly disburse full salaries to staff and pensions to retired employees, emphasizing the rightful entitlement of the university community.
Additionally, the registrar was urged to communicate in writing to the teaching community, providing clarity on the reasons behind the alleged illegal stoppage of salaries. The unfolding crisis at Peshawar University underscores the pressing need for resolution to ensure the welfare of the academic fraternity.
