The Pakistani rupee recorded a slight improvement against the US dollar during early trade on Thursday, gaining 0.06 percent in the interbank market.
By mid-morning, the local currency was being traded at Rs280.70 against the greenback, up by 16 paisas from Wednesday’s close of Rs280.86. Dealers said the movement reflected a mix of cautious optimism and steady demand for the dollar.
Despite the modest uptick, the rupee’s broader trend has been relatively stable. Since the beginning of the current fiscal year, the currency has appreciated by Rs2.90, or just over one percent, against the US dollar. However, on a calendar-year basis, it remains weaker by Rs2.31, reflecting the pressures faced earlier in 2025.
Dollar eases globally
In the global market, the US dollar was slightly off its recent multi-month highs on Thursday as investors showed renewed appetite for riskier assets. The euro traded around $1.1495, only marginally higher than Tuesday’s three-month low, while the British pound came under mild pressure ahead of the Bank of England’s policy meeting, where a softer tone is widely expected.
Previous close against dollar, other currencies
On Wednesday, the rupee had gained marginally against the dollar, closing at Rs280.86 compared with Rs280.87 a day earlier. In the open market, the dollar was quoted at Rs281 for buying and Rs281.90 for selling.
The local currency also showed mixed performance against other major currencies. It rose slightly against the UAE dirham to Rs76.47 and strengthened 0.57 paisa against the Chinese yuan to Rs39.41. The rupee also appreciated 90 paisas against the euro, closing at Rs322.83, while posting a notable gain of Rs2.09 against the British pound to settle at Rs366.21.
Currency traders say the rupee’s near-term movement will depend largely on foreign inflows and central bank intervention, but overall market sentiment remains calm as Pakistan’s external position shows early signs of improvement.
