ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani inmate lost his life in Afghanistan due to alleged inhumane treatment during his incarceration.
Bahram Shah, a Pakistani national confined in Mazar-e-Sharif prison, succumbed to what is claimed to be the indifference of the prison authorities.
Bahram Shah had been apprehended by Afghan police on May 4, following a complaint filed by an Afghan citizen. The complaint was related to a guarantee provided by Bahram Shah, which he failed to honor.

Notably, Bahram Shah was suffering from a heart condition, and medical professionals had recommended an urgent operation. Given his critical health condition, doctors had advised his immediate release.
However, an Afghan judge reportedly issued an order that demanded the provision of a second guarantor for his release, a decision criticized as inhumane and potentially illegal.
This incident has raised concerns about the treatment of foreign detainees in Afghanistan, particularly under the purview of the Afghan Interim Government.
It is worth noting that prior to this incident, two Pakistani laborers had also been held in an unauthorized private prison owned by an Afghan citizen.
