Netflix loses $630M Timothée Chalamet hit after just 30 days

Netflix has quietly removed Wonka, one of Timothée Chalamet’s biggest box office successes, after a surprisingly short streaming window. The $634.6 million global hit left the platform on 30 November, only 30 days after it began streaming, prompting viewers to question why it disappeared so quickly.

The fantasy prequel, which is the third-highest-grossing film of Chalamet’s career, was added to Netflix in early November before being pulled at the end of the month. Several entertainment outlets have reported that the film is expected to move to HBO Max next, although the platform has not formally confirmed this.

Why the sudden exit?

While films often rotate between services as licensing agreements shift, a one-month window is unusually short for a major studio release. Wonka earned strong reviews on its original release, scoring 82 percent with critics and 90 percent with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 66 rating on Metacritic. Chalamet stars as a young Willy Wonka discovering his gifts as an inventor, magician and chocolatier, and his performance was widely praised, helping the film climb quickly into Netflix’s Top 10.

A sequel is already in development, with director Paul King confirming in a recent interview that the team has completed “about half of a draft” and hinting that the follow-up may expand the story internationally.

Where will the film stream next?

Although Wonka has now left Netflix, multiple industry reports suggest it is likely to appear on HBO Max in the near future. However, the streamer has not yet announced a release date or officially confirmed that it will carry the film.

For now, viewers who missed its brief Netflix run will need to wait for updates on where the movie will land next.
