Minority community’s doctor shot dead in Sargodha

WEB DESK: A prominent gastroenterologist Dr Sheikh Mahmood was fatally targetted in an attack on a minority community at Sargodha’s Fatima Hospital on Friday. The assailant, disguised as a sanitation worker, shot him multiple times before fleeing. With 31 years of service, Dr Mahmood was known for treating underprivileged patients for free.

Dr Sheikh belonged to the Ahmadiya community, which has a history of persecution, and recently lost another member to mob lynching in April in Karachi.

Police confirmed the 58-year-old doctor had previously faced threats due to his faith, forcing him to leave a prior job. Authorities vowed swift action, but no arrests have been made.

He leaves behind his mother, wife, four children, and countless patients who relied on his decades of medical service. Police reports indicate the attacker disguised himself in a “Clean Punjab Program” uniform, purchased an outpatient slip, and waited inside the hospital. As Dr Mahmood exited his office, the attacker shot him multiple times in the back and abdomen. Despite being rushed to DHQ Teaching Hospital, the doctor succumbed to his wounds.

In December 2024, another Ahmadi man was killed in the Fazal Bhamro area in the jurisdiction of ​​Naukot police station, Mirpurkhas district.
