WISCONSIN: Michael Schumacher, renowned for his biographies and writings on Great Lakes history, died on December 6 at the age of 75. His daughter, Emily Joy Schumacher, confirmed his death on Monday. No cause of death was disclosed.
The Wisconsin-born author Schumacher began his career as a literary writer and went on to make significant contributions to the world of biography. His best-known works include Dharma Lion: A Biography of Allen Ginsberg, Crossroads: The Life and Music of Eric Clapton, and Francis Ford Coppola: A Filmmaker’s Life.
Among his other notable books are Mr Basketball: George Mikan, the Minneapolis Lakers and the Birth of the NBA and Will Eisner: A Dreamer’s Life in Comics. Eisner was a pioneering cartoonist and a major figure in the development of the graphic novel.
Born in Kansas and raised in Wisconsin, Schumacher studied political science at the University of Wisconsin–Parkside. He fell one credit short of graduating, a decision his daughter said stemmed from his instinct to pursue a life as a writer.
