Magnitude 5.5 earthquake hits Southern Highlands, Papua New Guinea

PAPUA NEW GUINEA: A strong earthquake of magnitude 5.5 shook the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea early Tuesday morning, January 27, 2026.

According to Seismologists reports, the quake struck 46 km (29 miles) south of Mendi at around 3AM local time.

Seismologists said that the earthquake was shallow, with a depth of about 10 km (6 miles). Early reports suggested slightly different numbers for magnitude and location, but the final readings confirm it as a magnitude 5.5 quake.

Residents in the area felt the shaking, but authorities say there have been no major injuries or serious damage. Minor effects, such as objects falling off shelves or broken windows, are possible.

Seismologists continue to monitor the region for aftershocks and will provide updates if the situation changes.
