Liverpool not expecting January signings, says Slot

LONDON: Liverpool manager Arne Slot has said the club is not expecting any new arrivals before the January transfer window closes, despite concerns over limited defensive options ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Slot acknowledged the challenges of the January transfer market but indicated that Liverpool would continue with their existing squad. His comments come amid reports linking the club with centre-back Marc Guehi and forward Antoine Semenyo, both of whom have since joined Manchester City.

“I expect to stick with the squad we have,” Slot said. “However, if an opportunity arises, the club will always look at it.”

Liverpool have faced a difficult period in defence due to injuries and absences, while their attacking options have also been stretched in recent weeks following Alexander Isak’s injury and Mohamed Salah’s absence at the Africa Cup of Nations.

One positive ahead of the Bournemouth fixture is the return of Salah, who rejoined the squad earlier this week. The Egyptian forward has an impressive record against the south-coast side, scoring 12 goals in 12 matches.

Slot confirmed Salah is fit but said the final starting line-up would be decided after the last training session.

“Knowing Mo, he is ready to play,” he said.

Liverpool will, however, remain without defender Ibrahima Konate, who has been granted time off following the death of his father.

“These are private matters and should remain so,” Slot said. “The player needs time to be with his family and for himself.”

Despite the lack of January reinforcements and limited squad depth, Slot said his players have responded well to the demands of the season.

He expressed confidence in the squad’s competitiveness as Liverpool look to maintain momentum in domestic and European competitions, with the team currently on a 13-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

“It’s difficult to predict the future,” Slot added. “But we are a very competitive team against any team in the world.”
