LHC takes swift action to combat smog, pollution

LAHORE: In a proactive move to address the issue of smog and pollution in the region, Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the immediate closure of factories responsible for emitting pollution that contributes to the smog problem.

The court’s decision comes as a ray of hope for residents seeking relief from hazardous air quality.

Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court presided over the hearing in response to a petition filed by concerned citizen Haroon Farooq, who sought effective measures to combat smog. Commissioner Lahore, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, appeared before the court to discuss the matter.

LHC issues environmental directives to tackle smog issues

During the hearing, the court issued a strong directive to seal factories emitting black smoke. These factories will remain closed until their owners provide a legally binding affidavit promising to address the pollution issue. The court also mandated that if there is a repeat violation, the factory owners must commit to demolishing their facilities.

Justice Shahid Karim expressed optimism about the direction they are taking, emphasizing the significance of the next two months in addressing the smog crisis.

He stressed the need to engage the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to play a more active role in mitigating the issue. Looking ahead, he emphasized the necessity of taking significant steps from the outset in the coming year.

Furthermore, the court instructed authorities to document evidence by taking pictures of vehicles emitting excessive smoke.

Commissioner Lahore assured that strict action would be taken against such vehicles without discrimination. Additionally, the traffic police were directed to actively intervene and halt vehicles that contribute to environmental pollution.

The Lahore High Court adjourned the case for further hearing, scheduled for November 07, signaling a continued commitment to addressing the pressing issue of smog and pollution in the region.
