iPhone 18 leak hints at next-level performance, DSLR-style camera control

Apple may still be a year away from introducing its iPhone 18 lineup, but the next generation of its flagship phones is already shaping up behind the scenes.

The company’s long-term development plan offers tech watchers an early glimpse of what could be one of its most ambitious updates yet, combining a refined design, advanced AI capabilities, and satellite-based connectivity.

Two-phase launch plan on the horizon

According to reports from multiple analysts, Apple is reworking its release strategy for 2026. Instead of unveiling all iPhone 18 models at once, the tech giant is expected to split the launch into two phases. The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the long-rumoured foldable iPhone could debut in September 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 and a budget-friendly iPhone 18e may arrive a few months later in spring 2027.

Refining the design, not reinventing it

Early leaks suggest the Pro models will maintain the same size as their predecessors, with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch screens. The familiar triple-lens camera design will likely stay, but the Dynamic Island — Apple’s display cutout for notifications and Face ID — might shrink further or even disappear in some models. Industry insiders remain divided, with some predicting a near full-screen design and others expecting only a slimmer cutout for now.

Powering up with smarter chips and AI focus

At the heart of the iPhone 18 Pro will reportedly be Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, built on TSMC’s advanced 3nm process. While raw speed gains may be modest, the real leap lies in the chip’s new CoWoS packaging, which tightly integrates the processor, memory, and Neural Engine. This design could drastically improve how the phone handles AI features, a core part of Apple’s upcoming “Apple Intelligence” push.

Apple is also expected to introduce its in-house C2 modem, marking another move away from Qualcomm. The modem should deliver faster 5G speeds, better battery efficiency, and support for mmWave in the US.

Smarter cameras with variable aperture

Camera enthusiasts might have reason to celebrate. Reports suggest Apple is working with Samsung on a new three-layer image sensor that improves low-light performance and colour accuracy. The main 48MP Fusion camera could also include a variable aperture system — a first for iPhones — allowing users to adjust light levels much like a DSLR camera.

Satellite-powered connectivity in development

Another standout rumour is Apple’s plan to bring 5G satellite internet to its iPhones. Unlike the current SOS feature, which only supports emergency messaging, the new system could allow full internet access via satellites, even in remote areas.

Simplified camera button design

Finally, Apple may tweak the Camera Control button introduced in the iPhone 17 series. To cut manufacturing costs, the company is expected to simplify its internal mechanism by removing the capacitive layer while retaining pressure sensitivity, ensuring the same functionality at a lower repair cost.
