The 2026 New Year Honours list has put a clear spotlight on entertainment and culture, with figures from film, music, comedy and sport among those recognised for their contributions to British society.

Actor Idris Elba has been knighted for his work supporting young people, marking one of the most high-profile honours in this year’s list of 1,157 recipients. Elba founded the Elba Hope Foundation and has been closely involved in anti-knife crime initiatives aimed at creating safer pathways for vulnerable youth.

Reacting to the honour, Elba said he accepted it on behalf of the young people whose talent and resilience have driven the foundation’s work, while calling for continued, practical support to help steer them away from violence.

Music, film and television recognised

Film and stage star Cynthia Erivo has been appointed an MBE, alongside singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding, who was recognised for her work as an environmental ambassador.

Elsewhere, actor and presenter Warwick Davis, author and television personality Richard Osman and comedian Matt Lucas were awarded OBEs, reflecting the growing presence of entertainment figures in the honours system.

Comedian Bill Bailey, actor Sally Lindsay and children’s television star Paul Chuckle were among those named MBEs.

Osman said he was “absolutely thrilled” to receive the honour, while Davis joked that it was the best thing to happen to him, despite having appeared in Star Wars.

Sport and culture cross over

Beyond entertainment, the list also recognised major sporting achievements. England women’s football head coach Sarina Wiegman has been made a dame, while captain Leah Williamson received a CBE. Teammates Ella Toone, Keira Walsh, Alex Greenwood and Georgia Stanway were all awarded MBEs following England’s European Championship success.

Writer and actor Meera Syal was also honoured with a damehood, underlining the list’s strong emphasis on cultural impact.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said this year’s honours recognised people who strengthen communities and put the common good ahead of personal gain, describing the recipients as representative of a compassionate and creative Britain.

Last year’s New Year Honours included figures such as Stephen Fry, Carey Mulligan and Eddie Marsan.
