As the iPhone 17 series arrives in Pakistan, buyers are facing significant taxes to get their devices PTA approved for use with a local SIM.
The amount varies depending on the model and whether the phone is registered through a passport or a CNIC.
PTA charges for iPhone 17
The base iPhone 17 has the lowest charges. Buyers registering through a valid passport will pay Rs128,766, while CNIC registration increases the cost to Rs154,293.
PTA charges for iPhone Air
The iPhone 17 Air carries a higher tax of Rs151,322 via passport and Rs175,949 through CNIC.
PTA charges for iPhone 17 Pro
For the iPhone 17 Pro, PTA approval costs Rs171,789 with a passport and Rs210,317 with a CNIC.
PTA charges for iPhone 17 Pro Max
The iPhone 17 Pro Max comes at the top end, with Rs182,710 for passport registration and Rs213,613 for CNIC. Importantly, the tax is the same regardless of storage size, from 256 GB to 2 TB.
Buying non-PTA approved iPhones locally can push costs even higher. A non-PTA approved iPhone 17 Pro Max (256 GB) currently sells for Rs450,000. If registered through a CNIC, the total cost could reach Rs663,613. Purchasing a iPhone 17 Pro Max already PTA approved is often cheaper, around Rs565,000.
There have been discussions in the past about lowering or removing smartphone taxes, with pressure from both the public and senators, as well as proposals from PTA.
However, no official decision has been announced. The PTA itself does not set these taxes but provides the platform for payments, which are collected by the Federal Board of Revenue.
For now, these remain the official costs for registering the iPhone 17 series in Pakistan.
