Govt revises fuel levies: petrol up, diesel down

Petroleum levy

The federal government has raised the petrol levy by 60 paisa per litre, bringing it to Rs79.62 per litre, while keeping petrol prices unchanged for the next 15 days. The new levy took effect from November 16.

Official documents reveal that the petroleum levy on high-speed diesel (HSD) has been reduced by Rs1.60 per litre, lowering it to Rs75.41 from Rs77.01. Despite this reduction, the overall price of HSD has been increased by Rs6, taking the new rate to Rs284.44 per litre.

Latest fortnightly review

The federal government on Saturday, November 15, kept the petrol price unchanged at Rs265.45 per litre for the next fortnight, following recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).

According to a Finance Division notification, the government revised petroleum product prices based on input from OGRA and relevant ministries. While petrol rates remained steady, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) was increased by Rs6, rising from Rs278.44 to Rs284.44 per litre.

Previous revision

In the last fortnightly review at the beginning of November, petrol prices were raised by Rs2.43 to Rs265.45 per litre, while HSD saw a Rs3.02 increase to Rs278.44 per litre, again following OGRA’s recommendations.

At major petrol stations in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi, high-octane petrol is being sold at Rs279 per litre, while regular petrol is priced around Rs266.60.

The government said the adjustments aim to manage rising fuel costs while easing the burden on diesel consumers, which include transport operators and industries across the country.
