ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to organize general elections during the second week of February 2024.
Insiders who are aware of the situation have informed ARY News that the election commission will probably release the schedule for the general elections after month December 2023.
Sources from the ECP have stated that the schedule for the elections will be disclosed 54 days after the process of delimitation, which means defining the constituencies, is completed.
In addition, the ECP has begun discussions with significant political parties about the upcoming general elections in the nation.
This electoral overseer has chosen to talk to the leaders of these major political parties to determine the course of action for the forthcoming elections in the country.
New ECP assurance boosts February election prospects
The discussions during these meetings will involve various topics, including setting the boundaries of constituencies, updating the lists of eligible voters, arranging the process of the general election, and deciding on the timetable for the election events.
Earlier, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja decided not to meet the president, and he expressed his stance in a written message. The message conveyed the ECP’s respect for President Arif Alvi. However, according to the Election Amendment Act, there is no requirement for consultation about the election date.
While the president has the authority to announce the election date when the assembly is dissolved, the ECP is independent in announcing the date, the message conveyed.
It’s worth noting that President Arif Alvi had extended an invitation to Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja for a meeting on Wednesday, to discuss the decision of the general election date.
